Biography

Matt is one of New England’s leading real estate and finance attorneys with more than twenty years of experience handling large and complex transactions for lenders, developers, universities, multinational corporations, and more. Leaning on his extensive industry knowledge, Matt adeptly guides clients through a wide range of commercial and real estate transactions. From business lending and refinancing to mixed use development to utility scale energy projects, Matt is well versed in the structuring and negotiation of a diverse range of commercial real estate matters.

Matt skillfully manages all phases of real estate-based loan transactions for both lenders and borrowers, regularly assisting with the purchase and sale of existing businesses, new construction, leasehold improvements, and the refinancing of existing debts. He collaborates closely with clients throughout the loan process, advising on loan structure terms, drafting and reviewing loan documents, preparing title insurance, and handling loan closings.

He has a proven track record representing businesses in the acquisition, redevelopment and expansion of existing projects, as well as the construction of new facilities and leasing of professional and retail space. Matt also advises developers of residential, commercial, and mixed-use condominiums on conversion, new development, and successor declarant scenarios.

When small and family-owned businesses meet a challenge, Matt provides counsel on a wide range of matters including formation and expansion, leasing, purchasing, selling businesses and their assets, property development, private easements, and real estate-related issues.

In the energy sector, Matt has a wealth of experience acting as lead or local counsel to utility-scale energy companies in Maine, assisting with the purchase and sale of assets and negotiating site security agreements including easements, leases, and purchase agreements for new or expansion projects. He also represents lenders looking to secure energy sector loan collateral and landowners entering energy project leases, easements, and purchase agreements.
