August 2, 2007 PORTLAND, Me. - Preti Flaherty’s Sharon G. Newman has
been elected President of The Congregation Bet Ha’am Board of Directors in
South Portland, Maine. Congregation Bet Ha’am is the spiritual home for an
active and growing community of Reform Jews. During Ms. Newman's term as
president, Bet Ha'am will complete a capital campaign to fund construction of a
new sanctuary and renovation of its current building at its South Portland
campus, the former Thornton Heights elementary school. Work is anticipated
to begin during 2008.
As an attorney with Preti Flaherty, Sharon practices with the firm’s
Environmental Law Group. She advises developers, lenders, and other clients
seeking to assess and limit potential environmental liabilities in the purchase
and sale of real property and businesses. She also counsels industrial and
manufacturing clients on environmental compliance issues and has represented
clients before State and Federal environmental and regulatory agencies.
She is a former Regional Counsel with the U.S. Environmental Protection
Agency.
After practicing in Seattle, Washington and Cleveland, Ohio, Sharon relocated
to Maine in 1996. She lives in South Portland with husband, Perry Newman,
and daughters, Hallie and Lennie. In 1978, she graduated from Barnard College,
Columbia University, magna cum laude, with honors in psychology, and in
1984 received her law degree from Stanford Law School.
