Portland, ME – Attorney Harold C. Pachios, Managing Partner of the law firm
Preti Flaherty, recently attended a conference in Athens, Greece sponsored by
the Hellenic American University. The conference was titled “Demonstrating
Quality in Higher Education: First International Conference on University
Assessment.” Pachios served as Keynote Session Chair and moderated a panel
on Policy Initiatives for Quality Assurance.
Pachios also addressed the World Affairs Council at their annual board
meeting held in Falmouth, Maine in June, and spoke on “Global Public Opinion
and the Erosion of International Cooperation: A look at how hegemony, military
power and perceived arrogance have undermined U.S. foreign policy.”
He also served as moderator during a program sponsored by the University of
Southern Maine and St. Joseph’s College of Maine. The program was titled
“Religion, Public Diplomacy and Conflict Resolution: The Role of American
Judaism, Christianity and Islam.”
In July, Pachios addressed the 2005 Sister Cities International Annual
Conference in Spokane, Washington as a panelist and spoke on the “Role of
Local Government and Economic Development Youth.”
After a decade in Federal government and more than 30 years of legal
practice, Pachios now pursues projects ranging from complex litigation before
administrative tribunals and courts to counseling corporate clients in contract,
real estate, regulatory, and shareholder matters. He serves as general counsel
for several corporate clients and also counsels clients on governmental and
legislative issues.
Pachios is former chairman of the U.S. Advisory Commission on Public
Diplomacy, designated by President Clinton in 1999. The Commission, and its
Washington staff, advises the President, Secretary of State, and Congress on
public diplomacy programs carried out by the State Department and U.S. embassies
around the world. He is currently a member of the Council on Foreign Relations
Task Force on Public Diplomacy.
