Harold Pachios, managing partner of Preti Flaherty, one of Portland, Maine’s
leading law firms, has been nominated by President George W. Bush to serve the
remainder of a three year term as Chairman of the US Advisory Commission on
Public Diplomacy.
The U.S. Advisory Commission on Public Diplomacy is a bipartisan,
Presidential appointed panel created by Congress in 1948 to provide oversight of
U.S. Government activities intended to understand, inform and influence foreign
publics. Mr. Pachios was appointed to the chairman’s post by President Clinton
in 1994, and was recently described in PR Week Magazine as “America's
public-diplomacy oracle.”
Mr. Pachios recently testified before a Congressional committee, saying the
American government ought to work harder at changing the way Arab countries
perceive the U.S., and suggested the best vehicle for that is improved
communications.
Mr. Pachios, a Cape Elizabeth resident, is former deputy press secretary to
President Lyndon Johnson. He has served as chairman of the Maine Democratic
Party.
Preti Flaherty has offices in Portland, Bath and Augusta, Maine, Concord, NH and Boston, MA. With more than 80 attorneys, the firm counsels clients in the areas of business law, energy, environmental, estate planning, health care, intellectual property, labor and employment, legislative and regulatory, litigation, technology and telecommunications.
