Portland, ME - Sigmund D. Schutz, an environmental, litigation and media law
attorney at Preti, Flaherty, Beliveau, Pachios & Haley, LLC was recently
elected to the Board of Directors of the Portland Chapter of the American Red
Cross. The Board is the governing body of the Portland Chapter.
Schutz has also been named as the Chair of the Board's Strategic Planning
Committee.
The American National Red Cross was formed in 1881 and chartered by Congress
in 1900. For more than 80 years, the volunteers of the Portland Chapter have
helped thousands of families who have been the victims of fires, floods,
hurricanes, and winter storms. Red Cross provides food, clothing, shelter,
mental health counseling and other emergency aid, as well as ongoing assistance
to individuals and families recovering from emergencies. Red Cross volunteers
and staff also work around the clock to keep military members and their families
connected during times of personal crisis, to provide state of the art health
and safety programs to individuals and businesses, and to keep the region's
blood supply at a safe level for all in need. In addition, trained Red Cross
volunteers know that being prepared for disaster is the best way to prevent
personal tragedy. That's why the Red Cross offers disaster preparedness
presentations to schools, organizations, businesses, churches and clubs in the
29 communities they serve.
Schutz, a Portland resident, is active in a number of charitable endeavors.
He works on pro bono cases through the Maine Volunteer Lawyers Project, has been
a volunteer teacher for Junior Achievement in Westbrook and interned at the
Cornell Legal Aid Clinic while in law school.
