Fired deputy gets $500,000 award

BRENTWOOD – A jury has awarded a former Rockingham County sheriff's deputy $500,000 in damages after he claimed he was wrongfully fired following an off-duty scuffle.

The verdict by a Hillsborough County jury came Monday after a four-day trial.

"I'm happy it's over. I've gone through a lot in 3 1/2 years," Jay MacKenzie, 39, of Greenland, said last night.
