May 10, 2005 – PORTLAND, ME – Preti Flaherty today announced that Mark
L. Haley has rejoined the law firm following a five-year leave of absence where
he served as Vice President and Deputy General Counsel of General Dynamics at
the company’s Falls Church, VA headquarters.
“I have missed Maine and private practice. Preti Flaherty has grown
substantially in my absence and become a regional New England presence. There is
a good deal of momentum here and I look forward to helping grow the firm,” Mr.
Haley said.
Mr. Haley joins Preti Flaherty’s litigation and business law practice. His
background extends over 26 years in building a practice in the areas of complex
commercial litigation, labor and employment law, legal malpractice defense and
public utility law.
Most recently, as Vice President and Deputy General Counsel of General
Dynamics, Mr. Haley was responsible for the daily oversight of the company’s
legal operations with an emphasis on the control of litigation, regulatory
matters, labor and employment, and government contracting. He supervised all of
General Dynamics’ claims and actions, including a successful landmark appeal to
the United States Supreme Court, Cline v. General Dynamics Land Systems,
540 US 581 (2004), as well as antitrust issues including Hart Scott Rodino
filings.
While at General Dynamics, Mr. Haley directed the work of approximately 50 in
house lawyers, in the U.S. and abroad, as well as numerous outside counsel from
among the United States’ most prominent firms. During his tenure the company
grew from annual sales of $8 billion in 2000 to an expected $21 billion in 2005.
General Dynamics employs over 70,000 people worldwide, including operations in
Maine at Bath Iron Works and Saco Defense.
Mr. Haley has been listed in over ten editions of The Best Lawyers in
