Charles F. Dingman, Eric P. Stauffer and Randall B. Weill will speak on
Protecting Confidentiality, FERPA & HIPAA July 28, 2003 2:20 -
3:10pm
UNE Westbrook College Campus, Portland, ME The new privacy and
security rules adopted by the federal government under the Health Insurance
Portability and Accountability Act (HIPPA) require major changes in the way in
which health care providers, health plans, employers, and plan sponsors handle
health-related records and information. Educational institutions and
systems may be subject to HIPPA in a variety of ways. At the same time,
the preexisting FERPA mandates remain in place and may in some cases overlap the
new provisions. This program will review the ways in which HIPAA is most
likely to affect school environments and propose approaches to coordinating
efforts to comply with these two regulatory rubrics. Key issues arising in
connection with HIPAA Business Associate Agreements will be included in the
discussion.
