The Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (“HIPAA”) and
related regulations spell out complex privacy requirements that will take effect
in April 14, 2003. Although only “covered entities” are subject to all
HIPAA requirements, firms that provide services to covered entities may be
“business associates” that must also take action to comply with special HIPAA
