Biography

Daniel W.  Walker is a partner with Preti Flaherty’s Legislative, Regulatory and Governmental Services Practice Group. He focuses his practice on advocating for clients before the Maine Legislature, the Executive Branch and other state and federal governmental agencies.

Prior to joining Preti Flaherty, Daniel practiced legislative and regulatory affairs and municipal law with a large Maine-based firm, where he also focused on elections and campaign finance law. He also served as Legal Counsel to the Speaker of the Maine House of Representatives, advising on constitutional, procedural and policy issues.

Dan completed two clerkships with Judges Gregory K. Orme and James Z. Davis of the Utah Court of Appeals. He also practiced as an associate with the litigation group of a Utah-based firm, where he represented Microsoft for two years in Caldera v. Microsoft, a private antitrust case.

Representative Matters

  • Currently serves as General Counsel to the Maine Democratic Party.  Served as counsel in several state election campaigns, including advising Governor Baldacci’s Re-election campaign. 
  • As Legal Counsel to the Speaker of the Maine House of Representatives, he coordinated the drafting and passage of a major revision of the nonprofit corporations act and a new law regulating the conversion of nonprofit corporations to for-profit entities.

  • Board Member, Holocaust and Human Rights Center of Maine

Professional Achievements/Publications

  • Presented lectures on Maine Legislative and Lobbying Law for the University of Maine School of Law, the Maine State Bar Association, and the Maine Assoc. of Nonprofits.
  • Presented lecture on media law for Lorman Seminars.
  • Published articles in the Portland Press Herald and the Media Law Resource Center Newsletter on Election Law and media law.
