Bio

Patrick R. Scanlon is a Partner in Preti Flaherty’s Portland office, where he practices with the firm’s Intellectual Property practice group. He focuses his practice on patent matters, particularly assisting clients in obtaining and exploiting patent rights.

Patrick has practiced patent law for more than 15 years and has prepared and prosecuted hundreds of patent applications in a wide range of technical fields.  Patrick also has extensive experience with preparing and negotiating licensing agreements, providing patent clearance evaluations, rendering patent infringement and validity opinions, performing due diligence reviews, and establishing foreign patent rights. In addition to his patent practice, Patrick advises clients on other technology-related matters such as the protection and enforcement of trade secrets, as well as trademarks and copyrights.

Previously in-house patent counsel with the General Electric Company, Patrick has substantial insight on developing and implementing patent strategies and counsels clients on using intellectual property to best achieve their business goals. Prior to becoming a patent attorney, Patrick was a patent examiner for the U.S. Patent & Trademark Office for over six years. 

Patrick received a B.S. degree in Mechanical Engineering from Michigan State University in 1983.  He received his law degree from Georgetown University in 1990, and has practiced exclusively in intellectual property law since then.

Patrick lives in Cumberland, Maine with his wife and two children.
