Dennis C. Sbrega has extensive experience in representing lenders a wide
variety of in commercial loan transactions, troubled loan workouts, creditors'
rights matters, lender liability issues and foreclosures.
His practice
also includes documenting and closing acquisitions and dispositions of real
property and businesses for individual and corporate clients. He represents
lenders, developers, landlords and tenants in the negotiation of office,
industrial and retail leases. He also counsels a number of business
clients. He is listed in Woodward/White's The Best Lawyers in America.
After graduating in 1969 with a degree in English from Springfield
College, where he was also an All-American swimmer, he joined the U.S. Army
Security Agency. During his Army career, he studied Russian at the Defense
Language Institute at the Presidio of Monterey in California. Following
intelligence and security training in San Angelo, Texas, he was stationed behind
the Iron Curtain in West Berlin, where he monitored, translated and analyzed
Russian Army communications in Eastern Europe.
After his Army career
ended in 1972, he returned to the United States and in 1977 earned his law
degree from Western New England College School of Law. While attending the law
school's evening division, he worked full time as a paralegal at the commercial
law firm of Kamberg, Berman & Hendel, P.C. in Springfield, Massachusetts.
The work gave him early experience in lender representation and working with
clients and exposed him to the practical side of the legal
profession.
After law school, Dennis became a Partner in Kirsch &
Sbrega, P.C. in Massena, New York, a general practice firm with an emphasis in
litigation. While there, he co-authored an article for Matthew Bender's
Scientific Automobile Accident Reconstruction, titled "Ford Pinto and Mercury
Bobcat Fires."
In 1984, he joined the firm of Hiscock & Barclay, a
multi-office firm headquartered in Syracuse, New York, and became a Partner in
1987. He was Managing Director for the firm's branch offices in Portland and
Augusta, Maine, for seven years. He joined Preti Flaherty as a Member in
1991. He served as Managing Partner of the firm from 1993-1994. He
has also served as Chair of the Business Law Practice Group.
A native of
Holyoke, Massachusetts, Dennis is a member of the American, Maine State,
Cumberland County and New York State bar associations.
