BIOGRAPHY
John P. McVeigh has an active litigation practice centered on creditors'
rights, commercial disputes, landlord-tenant, intellectual property and
bankruptcy matters. John has substantial expertise in turning a judgment into
real money, and has brought numerous fraudulent transfer actions. He also has
significant experience in hydroelectric facility permitting and water rights
litigation, along with expertise in the interplay between environmental and
bankruptcy law. He also provides pre-emptive advice to businesses seeking to
avoid or minimize litigation.
John was born in New York and graduated from the University of Virginia in
1969, and he later returned there for graduate school and taught American
literature at the University for 10 years, prior to launching his legal career
with Preti Flaherty in 1987. He resides in Portland, Maine.
REPRESENTATIVE MATTERS
- He has successfully litigated numerous cases concerning contract, Uniform
Commercial Code, and securities matters, and has obtained many civil judgments,
including a million-dollar judgment against a landlord who routinely abused his
low-income tenants.
- John represented the major creditor of a large paper mill leading to the
successful sale of the mill out of bankruptcy, not only benefiting the creditor,
but saving hundreds of Maine jobs.
- He led the fight during the Enron bankruptcy to obtain the benefits of
multiple energy contracts for Maine's largest industrial consumers.
