Biography
Greg Hansel is Chair of the Litigation Practice Group and is listed in
Woodward/White’s The Best Lawyers in America. He focuses his
practice on complex business litigation. He has successfully handled some
of Maine’s largest cases and has a national litigation practice. Greg is
experienced in class actions, antitrust & trade regulation, healthcare,
securities, mass torts, contract, fraud, RICO, employment, international, real
estate, land use, intellectual property, technology, lender liability,
professional malpractice, corporate, personal injury, wrongful death, products
liability, construction, fidelity & surety, white collar criminal and
insurance as well as arbitration and mediation. He also keeps a general
practice counseling businesses and individuals.
Representative Matters
- Successfully defended Visa U.S.A., Inc. and Bayer Corporation in
indirect-purchaser antitrust class actions in Maine Superior Court. In both
cases, the courts granted motions to dismiss.
- Won a $40 million arbitration award in a contested international securities
fraud case tried for three weeks in Washington, D.C. on behalf of Kingspan Group
PLC, a publicly traded Irish company. Kingspan v. Baker, American
Arbitration Association.
- Achieved a $143 million settlement for the plaintiffs in Compact Disc
Minimum Advertised Price Antitrust Litigation, MDL No. 1361 (D. Maine), as
Court-appointed Liaison Counsel for the class
- As Court-appointed co-lead counsel for the certified class of foundries in
Foundry Resins Antitrust Litigation, MDL No. 1638 (S.D. Ohio 2004),
recovered $14.2 million for direct-purchaser class. Argued before the
Judicial Panel on Multidistrict Litigation in the case. Federal courts
also appointed Greg co-lead counsel for direct purchasers in Marine Hose
Antitrust Litigation, MDL No. 1888 (S.D. Fla. 2007); Window Coverings
Antitrust Litigation (Blind Builders USA Inc. v. Royal Window Coverings (USA)
LP), Case No. 07-1387 (E.D.P.A. 2007) and In re ACR Copper Tubing
Litigation, Case No. 06-2207 (W.D. Tenn. 2006).
- Lead trial counsel in obtaining a $1 million jury verdict for punitive
damages, one of the largest in Maine history, in landlord/tenant
litigation. Argued and won a unanimous affirmance in the Supreme Judicial
Court of Maine. Harris v. Soley, 756 A.2d 499 (Me. 2000).
- Defending Maine's largest private employer, Bath Iron Works Division of
General Dynamics Corporation, in U.S. District Court, defeated class
certification in an employment claim asserted by former employees. Rand v.
Bath Iron Works, 2000 WL 761630 (D.Maine 2000).
- Successfully represented Aetna, Inc. in national healthcare RICO class
action litigation. The Court certified the first class of health insurers and
later approved a settlement for $45.5 million in favor of the class.
Synthroid Marketing Litigation, MDL No. 1182 (N.D. Ill. 2000).
- In Pillar Point Partners Antitrust and Patent Litigation, MDL No.
1202 (D.Ariz.), an antitrust class action for price fixing, Greg and co-counsel
recovered $50 million for a national class of ophthalmologists who purchased
lasers used in LASIK eye surgery.

legal career in Florida. He began as an associate in the Commercial
Litigation department of Shackleford, Farrior, Stallings & Evans (now Gray
Robinson) in Tampa, where he became a partner. He later joined Holland
& Knight LLP, one of the nation's largest law firms, as a partner.
