The firm offers a 10-week summer associate program that provides students who
have completed their second year of law school with a broad range of experience
and opportunities. The size of the program generally ranges from 3 to 6
participants each year. An experienced partner oversees the program, and each
summer associate is provided a mentor to assist him or her over the summer
program.
Program Description
The Summer Program is based in our Portland office, but summer associates are
given the opportunity to work and gain experience in the firm's other offices
during the course of the summer. Throughout the summer, the partner in charge of
the program solicits assignments from all attorneys within the firm, but work is
also assigned directly from attorneys once the summer associates arrive. The
firm does not have a strict rotation program, but work distribution is carefully
monitored to make sure that each person is given as broad an experience as
possible. We also work to make sure that summer associates expressing an
interest in a particular area of law are given the opportunity to gain
experience in that area.
Summer associates at Preti Flaherty work on actual matters for real clients.
As part of their work assignments, summer associates are frequently given the
opportunity to attend client meetings, court appearances, regulatory hearings
and legislative proceedings. The firm also hosts a number of social activities
throughout the summer, including dinners at partners' homes, lobster bakes,
sailboat rides and baseball games.
Summer associates are provided feedback on assignments they undertake
throughout the summer. At the end of the summer associate program, all attorneys
within the firm are asked to provide written feedback on any summer associate
who they worked with, and these evaluations are reviewed by the firm's
Recruiting Committee, who make the final hiring decisions.
The summer associate program is Preti Flaherty's primary hiring tool for new
associates. The summer program gives both the participants and us the best
opportunity to learn about each other. Therefore, it is Preti Flaherty's goal to
offer positions to as many of its summer associates as possible.
The Beliveau-McCarthy Fellowship Program is open to first-year students at
the University of Maine School of Law students exclusively, and offers an
opportunity to gain hands-on experience in several major aspects of practicing
in a large Maine-based law firm. It was created in honor of two of Preti
Flaherty's most distinguished alumni of the University of Maine School of Law:
Albert Beliveau and Matthew McCarthy. The one available summer position is
full-time (40 hrs/week) and includes a weekly stipend. All first-year students
are welcome to apply, but only candidates with outstanding credentials will be
seriously considered.
