Corporate Associate Attorney

Electronics/Software Patent Lawyer

Boston, MA

Preti Flaherty has an immediate opening in its Boston office for a seasoned patent attorney with a background in electrical engineering, computer science, and software. A generous percentage-based compensation arrangement is offered, ideal for a mid-level practitioner who desires to develop and grow an existing practice. Candidates should have a book of portable business.

Primary responsibilities include, preparing and filing patent applications in the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office and prosecuting domestic and foreign patent applications. Patentability searches and opinions, and client counseling on matters of patentability are also integral aspects. The ideal applicant will have experience in drafting infringement and invalidity opinions, as well as performing due diligence investigations. Experience with licensing and technology-based agreements is desired.

A degree in electrical engineering or computer science is preferred, with seven to ten years practicing as a patent attorney. The ideal candidate will have substantial experience preparing and prosecuting patent applications software, computer systems, signal processing, telecom, networking, and electronic circuits. Registration to practice before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office is mandatory; admission to the Massachusetts Bar is preferred. Candidates should have superior legal writing, computer research, and communication skills.

Intellectual Property Partner– Biochemistry or Chemistry

Controller

Portland, ME

Preti Flaherty's accounting department is seeking a Controller based in the firm's Portland, Maine office. The Controller plays an important role in the Accounting Department, working with the Chief Operating Officer and Accounting Manager to provide financial information, analysis, and reporting for the firm.

Some examples of duties and responsibilities include:

  • Preparation of monthly financial statements, including review and analysis for the purpose of advising Firm Management of significant trends or concerns
  • Preparation, review, and analysis of financial reports as requested by Firm Management and Partners, including quarterly financial analysis and other reports for Management Committee and Partnership meetings, spreadsheets and financial calculations for appointed committees, and any other special projects as requested
  • Management of all aspects of the Firm’s retirement plan to ensure compliance with applicable laws, including calculation and remittance of timely and accurate contributions, year-end plan testing, coordination of education and communication to plan participants and coordination of annual audit and 5500 return
  • Cash management planning and budgeting, including coordination of loans and cash disbursements and reconciliation of operating and other accounts
  • Preparation of annual operating and capital budgets
  • Coordination of annual review and preparation of Firm’s income tax returns to ensure accuracy and compliance with Federal and state tax laws; coordination of annual Form 5500 for employee benefit plan
  • Review and advice to Firm Management on state tax compliance issues and/or audits
  • Oversight of accounting services for Firm subsidiaries and client projects as needed
  • Management of Firm’s fixed asset schedule including calculation of monthly depreciation
  • Oversight of all payroll processing functions including calculation of special compensation arrangements and backup coverage for Payroll Coordinator
  • Perform all duties of Accounting Manager in his/her absence and provide general assistance within the department and to the Chief Operating Officer as needed

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in accounting plus five years of financial management experience
  • CPA, MBA, or CMA preferred
  • Experience in income and payroll taxes, including multi-state taxation issues
  • Advanced spreadsheet skills plus strong analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills

Legal Assistant

Concord, NH

Preti Flaherty is seeking a full-time Legal Assistant to support two attorneys in its Concord office in the areas of business, corporate and bankruptcy law. In addition to a high level of technological proficiency, the successful candidate will have excellent communication, time management and organizational skills. Experience with Workshare, Microsoft Office and adobe is preferred.

Duties include:

  • Managing attorney schedules
  • Typing, editing and scanning documents
  • Annual attorney state renewals and managing CLEs
  • Submitting reimbursements (cell phone, travel, etc)
  • Making travel arrangements
  • Reviewing and submitting AMEX reports
