Stan Schurgin is an intellectual property attorney who serves as Chair of the Intellectual Property Practice Group and is resident in the firm's Boston office. He was previously the Senior Managing Partner of the IP firm Weingarten, Schurgin, Gagnebin & Lebovici, which has since merged with Preti Flaherty. Stan draws on more than forty years of experience in all facets of IP law to counsel corporate and university clients in patent, licensing, trademark and other intellectual property matters. He also helps clients develop and maintain internal company procedures for the management of intellectual property.

Stan is a trusted resource for technological transactions and in the strategic use and protection of intellectual property. His experience in evaluating intellectual property as part of start-up, acquisition and financing ventures has been an essential part of hundreds of transactions. Stan also regularly conducts due diligence studies, and renders legal opinions on issues of infringement, validity and ownership of intellectual property. In his diverse intellectual property practice, Stan helps companies and institutions of all sizes capitalize on their intellectual property portfolios. He has been recognized for his work with an AV Rating from Martindale-Hubbell and has been listed in Super Lawyers since 2004.

About Stan

Prior to launching his legal practice, Stan worked as a patent engineer and then as a corporate patent attorney at a large international electronics and communications company where he was engaged in the protection and analysis of a broad range of technology, particularly electronic systems, and in government contract patent and data requirements.

Stan holds a Bachelor of Science Degree in Electrical Engineering from Northeastern University (1959) and obtained his law degree, cum laude, from the New England School of Law (1964), where he was an Adjunct Professor of patent law for ten years. He has organized and participated in numerous seminars, conferences and continuing legal education programs on many different intellectual property topics.

Stan has been registered to practice before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office since 1962 and a member of the Massachusetts Bar since 1964. He is a member of the Boston Patent Law Association, Massachusetts Bar Association, American Intellectual Property Law Association, and the International Trademark Association.
