CURRENT PRACTICE
Dennis C. Sbrega concentrates his practice in representing lenders in a wide variety of sophisticated commercial loan transactions including syndicated loans, participated loans, multi-tranche loans, asset-based loans, real estate-based loans, construction loans and other complex commercial loan facilities involving a broad range of collateral security. He also acts as local counsel for lenders in large, multi-state lending transactions. Dennis has also represented lenders in loan workouts and has negotiated numerous workout agreements in connection with non-performing loans and troubled debt restructuring.
His practice also includes representing individual and corporate clients in the purchase and sale of real estate, businesses and other assets. He has also assisted the Health Law Practice Group concerning the acquisition of health care facilities. Dennis has also worked closely with the Health Law Practice Group in connection with the formation of a congregate care campus with multi-level services, including representing the health care client during the construction loan phase and the permanent financing with HUD. He also serves as counsel for a large credit card processing company.
BACKGROUND (EDUCATION; MILITARY; LEGAL)
After graduating in 1969 with a degree in English from Springfield College, Dennis joined the U.S. Army Security Agency. During his Army career, he studied Russian at the Defense Language Institute at the Presidio of Monterey in California. Following intelligence and security training at Goodfellow Air Force Base in San Angelo, Texas, he was stationed behind the Iron Curtain in West Berlin, where he monitored, translated and analyzed Russian Army communications in Eastern Europe.
After his Army career ended in 1972, he earned his law degree from Western New England College School of Law. While attending the law school's evening division, he worked full time as a paralegal at the commercial law firm of Kamberg, Berman & Hendel in Springfield, Massachusetts. The work gave him early experience in lender representation and working with clients and exposed him to the practical side of the legal profession. During his time as a law student and paralegal, he learned many things about the legal profession not taught in law school that continue to serve him well.
After law school, Dennis became a Partner in Kirsch & Sbrega in Massena, New York, a general practice firm which provided him with valuable experience in dealing with a diverse array of clients and practice areas. Dennis credits his time as a country lawyer as a major influence on his career which has shaped his approach to the practice of law to this day.
In 1984, he joined Hiscock & Barclay, a multi-office firm headquartered in Syracuse, New York, and became a Partner in 1987. He was Managing Director for the firm's branch offices in Portland and Augusta, Maine, for seven years. He joined Preti Flaherty as a Partner in 1991. He served as Managing Partner of the firm from 1993-1994. He has also served as Chair of the Business Law Practice Group and as a member of the Management Committee.
