Dealerships await word on closings

Local industry officials say General Motors and Chrysler cuts could come by today, but rural states might be partially spared.

The owners of Maine's 29 Chrysler and 47 General Motors dealerships may learn their fates this week. But some dealership owners are not losing sleep over possible closings.

They have been waiting for weeks for financially strapped Chrysler and GM to divulge which dealerships they plan to ax as they try to return to profitability. The news could come as early as today, according to Tom Brown, executive director of the Maine Automobile Dealers Association.
