AUGUSTA -- If you're looking for an electrician, you're more likely to hire someone recommended by a friend than by an advertisement.

It's that kind of personal, word-of-mouth communication local businesses crave. And online social media are proving adept at providing it.

Facebook, Twitter and YouTube are the better-known social media outlets that have emerged as valuable advertising vehicles, joining lesser-known sites called Linkedln, Foursquare, Yelp and TripAdvisor.
